Noorvik, AK, United States (AHN) - The nation began its 2010 census in a remote Inupiat Eskimo village in Alaska on Monday.
U.S. Census Bureau Director Robert Groves traveled by dog sled to meet with local leaders in Noorvik, a village north of the Arctic Circle with an estimated population of 660. He then personally conducted the the first enumeration, visiting the first home for 15 minutes before going on a tour of the village as temperatures dropped 5 degrees below zero.
"Today, we began the largest domestic undertaking in our nation's history," Groves said. "Getting an accurate count here will set the standard for the rest of the country."
